Understating Picture Formats.

Understanding Picture formats is very necessary for Web-Designing. The web will never be the lacing for acronyms.

Sometimes this difficult to keep track of them what they refer to as you learn web-design you also must know the most common picture formats like JPEG, GIF, PNG, SVG. Often without reference to what they are.

What they stand for. These three acronyms refer to the three most common web graphics formats and in this article, we will explore three web graphics formats in more detail.

Understanding how these formats work and deciding when to use one type of graphics over to another much easier.

Before we start discussing individual format I want to take just a moment to discuss web graphics in general.

Designing images for the web requires you, how images work within the browsers and the unique consideration required for web graphics.

Web Graphic Considerations.

Creating images for the web often requires the designer to find a balance between keeping file sizes small as possible while marinating acceptable image quality is an important skill have enough.

The browser displays the image. The image must be in format. The browser supports. Almost all browser support   JPG, GIF, PNG and SVG.

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.

Image compression standard established in 1992 and widely used for areas such as the web and digital photography. Often shortened to the file extension. “jpg.”

JPEG characteristics.

  • JPEG support millions of colours.
  • Ideal for Photograph and images with colour transitions.
  • However, they keep file size down.
  • Jpegs are compressed which we called lossy compression meaning images data thrown away as they saved depending on the level of compression you are choosing.
  • Jpegs choose the area of colours or them similar one area is tagged remained to read discured.

Gif means Graphic Interchange Format.

It was introduced in 1987 by CompuServe. It is the most popular image format type on the web.

Gif is 8-bit graphics.

Gif Characteristics.

  • Limited to 256 colours.
  • Typically used for logos or icons.
  • GIFs support transparency & limited animation.
  • Gif is the favourite format for web icons and small animation.

PNG: Portable Networks Graphic.

Relatively newcomers to the world of web graphics png.

 PNG was developed in 1995 as to response to copyright over the dispute with gif format.

Created to improve and replace the GIF format. Which was, at the time, facing patent license issues that threatened its wide usage online.

PNG characteristics.

  • Portable Networks Graphic.
  • Like Gifs, support transparency & uses lossless compression.
  • Like JPEGs, PNG supports millions of colours.
  • Typically, larger than GIFs and JPEGs.
  • Older browser support is lacking.

SVG: Scalable Vector Graphics.

  • SVG characteristics.
  • SVG is a vector graphics format.
  • Can be scaled independently of resolution.
  • Graphics are written in SVG markup, which makes them editable through code.
  • Since they’re markup, they can be further styled through CSS.
  • SVG is now widely supported among devices.

Deciding Which Format You Have to Use.


  • Take consideration.
  • Colour requirement.
  • Image dimension.
  • And the weight of all page contents.

Knowing how to file type compressed graphics and colour and supporting additional supporting capabilities such as transparencies will you inform the decision that when you choosing the picture formats you use your site.
